The Alaska State Poetry Out Loud Finals are sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Poetry Foundation, and The Alaska State Council on the Arts. Student participant travel was underwritten through a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is pleased to announce that Lakeidra Chavis from Lathrop High School in Fairbanks won the 2011 Alaska State Poetry Out Loud Finals, which were held on February 22, at The Juneau Arts & Cultural Center in downtown Juneau. Lakeidra will receive an all expenses paid trip to be the Alaska representative for the national finals in Washington DC, April 27 - 29. She has also won $500 for her school to purchase poetry materials. 

 

Kaylee Miltersen from Chugiak High School, came in second place. The competitors representing the various regions of the state were Kaylee Miltersen from Anchorage, Kendra Fleharty from Unalakleet, Lakeidra D. Chavis from Fairbanks, Katrina Greenleaf from Juneau, Trevor Pruitt from Ketchikan, Erica Kelly from Delta Junction, Whitney Winders from the Matsu Valley, Kirsten Rawding from Thorne Bay and Jess Andersen from Dutch Harbor.
